Even the most durable of roofs will eventually suffer some form of damage over time, but with a bit of maintenance, you can prevent major damage to and even extend the lifespan of your roof. Blue Square Roofing & Construction, LLC, a top roofer in the state, shares some simple tips on caring for your roof.
Make Sure the Roof Paint Isn’t Chipped
Even with the use of galvanized metal, rust can still form on metal roofs when they’re exposed to standing water and oxygen for long enough. Most metal roofs also have a rust-resistant coating, but any protective layer will eventually break down after it’s been exposed to enough wear and tear.
A fresh coat of paint can provide an extra layer of protection to your roof, but paint can easily get chipped or cracked. Relatively small cracks leave parts of the roof exposed to the elements, which might result in rusty patches. Rust can eat away most metal roofs, except for ones made of aluminum, and cause a roof leak.
That’s why it’s important to make sure the coat of paint remains intact. Nowadays, however, paint isn’t enough, especially with the increasingly erratic weather patterns. You can consult a roofing contractor about the different types of specialized coatings you can add to your roof.
Remove Any Debris on Your Roof
Roofing systems should be kept free of debris at all times. However, foliage and debris can be a bit more problematic for metal roofs. Due to the sleek surface of metal, debris usually slides off into and clog the gutters. This might result in water overflow that might steadily corrode your roof.
Apart from the occasional visual inspection, you can trim overhanging trees and branches to prevent the likelihood of foliage and debris accumulating on your roof.
The best way to prevent a leaking roof is to fix small cracks before they worsen and reinforce the roof’s protective layers. Of course, you don’t have the time to routinely inspect your roof, and reinforcing its protective layers will take a certain level of expertise. That’s why we recommend hiring a certified contractor to routinely inspect and maintain your metal roof.
